You know, it’s never been difficult to write romantic or passionate elements into fiction; whether in novel or script form. Now there are a few tropes I like reversing with my romantic material, and a few patterns I like to stick to. Now there is no shortage of eye rolling from some of the people I talk to, often commenting how I “write like a chick,” but that’s mainly because they never cotton to this type of art any way.
Having always been a natural at it for any number of reasons, don’t get this writer confused with a Harlequin author; their numbers are great! However if TAIM’s numbers blossom into what they’re capable of becoming, you’ll be able to really see some unique and compelling story-lines of a romantic nature play out… And especially because of how crass and frenetic the field these characters work within can be, that’s all the more reasons to counter that with moments of genuine heart and soul.
One easy example is Blake; a man who loves his job. As a male performer who enjoys the lustful sensuality of his job, the assumption goes that he’s only in it for the obvious; and don’t misunderstand, he is. However there is hardly ever a time that he doesn’t pay attention to the nuance of what he does, especially in doing what he can to truly make sure the women he’s with know his focus is also on them… Whether in front of the camera or behind, where they see a far more authentic man when he’s not working.
Though he could see himself falling hard for a woman like Val, they both know it wouldn’t work out for any number of factors. And that she desires what she can’t have, often part of her pattern of self punishment, this gives an edge to her personality most people find hard to deal with… Even when she’s far softer inside than given credit for. Her inner issues keep her from truly embracing life, potentially doomed to repeat that cycle if she doesn’t gain control.
Finally a more complicated example is Niles; a man who also loves his job. He’s a writer at heart, an organizer, and someone who finds working with people opposite him to his liking. Also a creature of habit and inhibition, he resists the many temptations thrown his way because he feels the people won’t understand his energy… And even when they do, he tends to find himself guarded because of his inexperience.
And using that as a basis for a rich and unique story-line, utilizing one of the reoccurring roles allows us to slowly learn where his heart and mind is when it comes to romance and sensuality… With no one being better suited for that than Veronica, a woman of genuine heart and true beauty both inside and out.
When TAIM and it’s people find’s itself in disarray, the main characters separated and battling against forces they can’t control, Niles is a captain without his crew. Never one to leave his post, he finds himself and his own energy isolated and depleted. When his friend Veronica visits him one night to see how he’s doing, she knows it’s not the best time to take their friendship to the next level, but needs to make sure he knows that this is the path they’re both on, even if he doesn’t know how to react.
The script sample ‘A Likely Romance’ illustrates just this. Part of a larger two-parter episode, an elaborate action packed parody; you’ll quickly see how the tees are setup and ready to go with this story arc… That’s if I’m even using the golfing terminology correctly, because as golfers go I’m a better tennis player, and I don’t play tennis!
