Whether you’re a creative or not, you really have to love the beauty in how art manifests itself. For example when an idea coalesces because of a song, or a day dream, a memory or conversation, it’s hard to think of anything else. This applies to artists of all kinds, but the only art that my fingers can produce involve a keyboard. (Granted, I’ll work on artistic projects with my nieces but yikes I am just terrible at them!)
I’ve really always admired that in actors, musicians, singers, artists and any of the other vast numbers of examples I’m forgetting… That together their brains hearts and hands are able to do what they do is a beautiful trifecta really. I love to hear stories of how some of the best scenes in movies and TV come together, or what inspired a specific painting, or the pain and beauty a musician will use in their songs.
I’ve also heard some also rely on the booze and the drugs. Truth be told, I find that somewhat interesting. First there are Mormons and Amish who have partied more than I have; though to be fair the Amish actually make it a point to do so and get it out of their system. Fun facts notwithstanding, a good amount of people have said I should get wasted or high, among other things, and my response is any number of sarcastic or self deprecating retorts.
And while I would imagine being under an alternative influence distracting, that’s almost as bad as when creativity strikes and you’re not able to get it down. The examples at the start of this should indicate that they can come at any time, and when they do you really don’t want to let them go. From writing on my hands back in the day or on whatever I could find and sustain my chicken scratch, to using a cell phone to just record me talking to transcribe later, the worst is when I’m driving… I won’t lie, I’ve even pulled over on occasion so I wouldn’t cause a ten car pileup!
At worst it can be a nuisance, but like bad pizza, at least it’s still pizza. (I would have also used FroYo but yeah, I’m told since I’m in my mid 30’s I should pipe down about that!) And at best, it can be a positive expression of the creative soul. You can’t tell when that energy will coalesce and if you don’t capture it when you can, it can be hard to bring back.
The point? Always have a pen and extra cell phone battery in your car, believe me they come in handy!
